Ajay Devgun quits smoking!Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss will be happy to note that at least one actor has finally and completely quit smoking. Admits Ajay Devgan, from the sets of Zee TV’s Rock N Roll Family, “Yes, I have completely quit smoking.” When quizzed about his inspiration, he replies tongue-in-cheek, “Well, the Health Minister has paid me more than the cigarette companies to quit smoking.” Felt the urge
A source close to Devgan says, “Ajay quit smoking six days ago. He was down with fever and a bad cold last week and on an impulse, decided to kick the butt. Members of his family, wife Kajol and friends had been telling him to quit for years but Ajay’s logic was you-convince-me or I-convince-you, and he wasn’t convinced enough to quit smoking.”The source continues, “He loved smoking and health reasons weren’t enough to make him quit. Though he got a scare last year when Saif Ali Khan suffered a mini heart attack because of smoking, he didn’t stop but tried cutting down. But one day, Ajay felt the urge to quit, and he did. He hasn’t puffed even once in the last six days whereas earlier he would sneak off outside to his garden to smoke.”

On-screen freedom, please!
Recently, in Bhopal, Devgan had joined Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Sharmila Tagore in taking a dig at Health Minister Ambumani Ramadoss where he stressed that in a democracy everybody had the freedom of expression, so smoking or drinking on screen ought not be banned. Devgan says: “In the films, when we show someone smoking or drinking, it is for a reason. It is not to promote any cigarette brand or liquor. If we have to show some historical character; for instance, if I have to make a movie on Winston Churchill, what will I show? I can’t make the movie if there is a ban on showing cigarettes in the film. He used to always have a cigar in his hand. What do I show then? Should I show a lollipop in Churchill’s mouth? Everyone has his or her responsibilities in place. Everyone knows what is right and wrong for them.”

Ajay Devgan plans to direct action flick nextAfter the encouraging response to his directorial debut “U, Me Aur Hum”, Ajay Devgan is thinking of directing an action flick next.“I’ve two subjects ready and I may decide to do either one, depending on what I feel right. After a very serious subject, I may decide to do a lighter film,” Ajay told “In fact, I’m seriously thinking of doing an actioner. If I do, it’d be very different from the stunts that we see in other films. But there definitely will be an undercurrent of a serious social message through the film for sure,” he added.Life comes a full circle for Ajay since he started his acting career with an action film “Phool Aur Kante” 15 years ago. But the competition doesn’t bother him.“I’ve always worked at my own pace. That’s going to change now. After ‘U, Me Aur Hum’, I can’t afford to be lazy. At the same time I’ve never bothered with what others do. Why should that change?”However, Ajay isn’t willing to give up his comic connections.“‘Golmaal Returns’ is much funnier than the first film and far more glossier,” said Ajay, who’s currently in Goa shooting for the last schedule of the comedy.“After this we’ve just one song left and then we’re done,” said the actor, who gets together with Kareena Kapoor for the second time after “Omkara”. The two films are world apart. “You can say that again! But then you can’t be doing only serious cinema all the time. Audiences like watching light films. So I’ll continue being part of them.”

I am a born director, says Ajay DevganKeeping his fingers crossed ahead of the release of his directorial debut U, Me aur Hum, Bollywood actor Ajay Devgan says he is going to continue directing good entertaining movies whether the film clicks or not at the box office. Devgan says that for him it was not a major shift from acting to direction as he believes that he is a born director and has that fire within him. “I started my career directing small budget films, so it was not a major change. In my early days, apart from acting in movies, I tried my hand in production, direction, music composing and all,” Devgan says. “I assisted my father in his directorial ventures several times and both of us knew that I have the flame in me to develop an idea and give it a shape. But then, I became an actor and didn’t get the time to direct.” Devgan is very positive about the success of his first directorial attempt. He believes he has done justice with the script and has come out with a entertaining story. “I will continue with direction as it is my favourite hobby or you can say a passion. I will not make a movie only for the sake of it, but will do it only when a right script will come my way,” says the actor, who has won two national awards for best actor for his role in “Zakhm”, and “Legend of Bhagat Singh”. But that does not mean curtains down for him as an actor as Devgan says his acting career will continue side-by-side. Though a veteran in Bollywood, Devgan hopes that the film, in which his wife Kajol co-stars him, will be an entertainer.

Frankly speaking, I don’t know whether it is the right time or not, but I have always wanted to tell people a story I strongly believe in.”I had this story idea in my mind for a long time and then I sat and wrote it down. Later when I gradually developed the screenplay, I felt that unless I directed the film myself, it would not be presented the way I want it to be,” Ajay told.Even before he started off as an action hero in the 1991 hit film “Phool Aur Kaante” for which he won the Filmfare award for best debutant actor, Ajay had worked with internationally acclaimed filmmaker Shekhar Kapur as an assistant director.”I had worked with Shekhar and when I was eight or nine years old, I also used to take part in editing and other technical areas of filmmaking with my father,” he said. The actor has been among the first few of his generation to turn producer. He has sharp, expressive eyes. And he appears to be very natural in all the challenging characters he has played so far.”Ajay has won two National Awards - the first one for Mahesh Bhatt-directed “Zakhm” and the other for Santoshi’s “The Legend of Bhagat Singh”.This year, he doled out a power-packed performance in Santoshi’s “Halla Bol” and Rohit Shetty-directed comedy flick “Sunday”. Ajay Devgan writes a column… Questions Ajay Devgan in an exclusive column written by him for Indiatimes Movies.
People keep asking me how I decided that this was the right time to direct my own film. To be honest, I don’t really know if this is the right time or not, but I know that this is a story I wanted to tell. A story I believed in. And felt strongly about. As they say, one from the heart.
Why this particular story? I can list many reasons, but the most important, and the primary reason for me to want to make this film, is its positivity. I’ve noticed that people these days have become more cynical and less optimistic than before. They tend to naturally have a negative outlook about things. Especially with regards to love, relationships, feelings, marriage, the works.
In today’s scientific world, everyone seems to be looking for tangible justifications for things they do. Even with regards to love, people spend hours theorizing about chemical reactions in the body, the impact of hormones and other such clinical things. My question is - where has all our romance gone? Why this obsession with rationale? Why do we hesitate to accept that it is possible, that deep within, one soul makes a connection with another – instinctively, impulsively, immediately?
Love at first sight. Happy marriages. Soulmates. These are concepts I believe in. I know that they exist. And as a result, they are important elements of my film.

Ajay’s favourite fiveAfter many excuses, umpteen discussions and several angry arguments later, Ajay Devgan agrees to talk about the most important women in his life — but with “certain conditions”. He will only speak about what he’s “comfortable” with. On the occasion of Women’s Day, Ajay took time off from the dubbing of U, Me Aur Hum to talk about his mom Veena, his two sisters Neelam and Kavita, his wife Kajol and daughter Nysa. Read on… Mother: Veena
I have been very close to my mother from the beginning, I was petrified of my father (action director Veeru Devgan). My mother always supported me in whatever I did — from my turning an actor to getting married and now becoming a director. I could always tell her whatever was on my mind, I could never open up to my dad like that. Whenever I got into mischief or trouble as a child, and in my youth, mom saved me from dad’s ire. When I fell in love, she knew about it too. She was happy just because I was happy. She guides mewhen she feels I am wrong. My mom’s been my friend, philosopher and guide. Even today, I can talk to her about anything and everything.

Sisters: Neelam and Kavita

My two sisters, Neelam and Kavita, are both younger to me and I have always been very possessive and protective about them and I love them to death. They are both married and happy in life and I think I have achieved something in life, when I see them with their families. Even today, they pamper me a lot. They are always a part of our family on all occasions, and are my biggest critics. They watch all my films and always give me constructive feedback and the dos and don’ts that I try to follow.

Wife: Kajol

Celebrating Love: With Ajay, Kajol and U Me Aur HumYou cant hurry love, No, you just have to wait; She said love don’t come easy, it’s a game of give and take Diana Ross’s love song pretty much sums up the theme of the CNN-IBN Valentine’s Day special show Celebrating Love. Moderated by Anuradha SenGupta, the show saw real-life celebrity couple Kajol and Ajay Devgan - making their first public appearance together on Indian television – talk about love, marriage and their upcoming film U Me Aur Hum. They were joined on the show by three more couples whose love stories are as intriguing and interesting as the concept of love - Srija and Shirish from Hyderabad, Daniella and Rahul from New Delhi and Namrata and Yogesh, also from New Delhi. Given below is an excerpt from the chat with Ajay and Kajol, followed by the complete video of the show. Anuradha SenGupta: U Me Aur Hum sees you both together after seven years. I am an Ajay Devgan fan and of his movies like Omkara, Company and Khaki. When you decided to pick your first movie to direct, the fact that you chose romance – ‘love at first sight’ – surprises me.Ajay: I didn’t decide I wanted to direct first and then decided the plot. I had something in my which I wanted to speak about. I had an idea. I wanted to speak about love, positively. I thought we were missing a lot of positivity and we discussed all problems except love. So I wanted to say something and decided I might as well say it myself. SenGupta: Is it something we are missing, Kajol? Is he a romantic guy and we don’t know about it? Kajol (laughs): Umm…The fact that I am hesitating should tell you a lot. I think he required a lot of training and that’s why it took us seven years to make U Me Aur Hum. I think he believes in the essence of romance more than anything else. I think he believes deep down that love is about – umm – jaise bolte hain, nibhana padta hai (one has to get by). Ajay: It’s not about talking, it’s about action. And that’s what I believe in. It’s in subtle things and not in the big things. You can just figure out if the other person loves you through those subtle things.

Kajol: You don’t have to give her a diamond ring to prove that you love her. SenGupta: (to Ajay) You just said positivity. In you director’s quote you say and I quote, ‘The primary reason for me to make this film is about positivity. People have become cynical and less optimistic than before.’ Why do you think that true love is not in such demand these days? Ajay: I am not saying it’s not in demand. But when you read papers and hear people talk, you just hear about things not working out, divorces happening and not getting along… Kajol: When you get married you go in thinking, ‘Oh my God! What am I going to do and I will get divorced.’ So you are already preparing yourself before hand.
