Sonam Kapoor

Much has been written and said about Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor after their debut film Saawariya which failed drastically at the box-office. Though Ranbir many a times referred Sonam only as a childhood friend and denied to be in any sort of intimate relationship, it is the media that occasionally refreshes the issue. Sonam who till date did not come open of her relationship with Ranbir had finally opened her heart. She clarified that she knows Ranbir from childhood and he is not her type. They are just good friends and not seeing each other.

Rumors are rife that Ranbir’s ladylove Deepika Padukone disliked his mixing up with Sonam and according to her advice Ranbir had cut off all the ties with her. Sonam’s choice of guy is Salman Khan and says that if he be single, she would definitely go for him. She loves to get into a messy relationship rather than a mature one.

Childhood friend Sonam and Ranbir are now like two opposite poles, hardly enquire about one another’s well-being. Today, Sonam is highly stimulated with her next release Dilli 6 with Abhishek Bachchan and Ranbir eagerly waiting for the Bachna Ae Haseeno outcome.

The debacle that was Saawariya is forgotten. And Sonam Kapoor is ready with her next film, Dilli 6 by Rakeyesh Mehra co-starring Abhishek Bachchan. Her father, that Bollywood survivor and comeback vet Anil Kapoor, had prepared her for disappointment and failure through his own bitter experience. “But it hits you when you go through it personally,” admitted the lovely Sonam. “It was disturbing because Saawariya, I truly believe, was a beautiful film. The negativity I faced after its release was scary. I just evaporated into thin air,” she adds.

Are Saawariya and Ranbir history now?

Both will remain more than special to me. Ranbir and I have known each other since we were kids. We were really close. And when you know someone very closely, there’s nothing to discover about him. But I know if I need Ranbir, he will be by my side.

Are you broken-hearted that he’s seeing Deepika?

Ranbir and I were never seeing each other. But I don’t know about the future. If both of us are single… you never know what destiny has in store. But, at this point, I can vouch he is not my type. He has grown up before his age. He is way too mature for me. He is very proper and cute. I love messy relationships, full of intensity and drama.

Your kind of guy would be…

I wish Salman Khan was single, not an actor, not my father’s friend, and my age. I know it’s asking for too much.

It’s said you’re a girl trapped in a woman’s body…

The image of Saawariya must be strongly etched in people’s minds. I looked and behaved like a woman, maybe. But, hello, I am a girl of my age, with dreams, style, fashion, and likes that’s so of my age. And, yes, I have a mind and opinion of my own, but I am not overbearing in it.

Whispers are that your dad’s not pushing your career enough…

Agreed, and why should he? I believe things should come by my karma. As his daughter, I am happy that dad is doing so well again. It’s laudable to see him being paired with young girls. But, no, dad isn’t deciding my offers. He lets me choose. We can have parallel careers running in the industry. It’s just that I’m not happy with the offers. Almost all are woman centric. I want to do young, yuppie roles that befit my age.

Will you kiss on screen?

No issues, if the role demands it.

Although Ranbir Kapoor comes cross as a shy guy with an understated attitude, he is anything but discreet when it comes to speaking about his love. The real life Saawariya of Deepika Padukone is madly in love and has no qualms admitting it. Nevertheless, he will not tolerate publicizing his love to an extent that there is no sense of privacy at all. At a recent press conference, on being coaxed to comment on his relationship with Deepika, he said, “Too much has been spoken about us. It is high time our work speaks more than our personal life. We are in a relationship but, for now, we are focusing on our career.” He added, “I have already confessed my love for Deepika and don’t think I need to say anything else about it.”

How about his alleged relationship with Sonam Kapoor? Till Deepika came by, there were rumours of proximity between the two Saawariya stars. But they seem to have drifted apart now. According to Ranbir, work got them together and it is work that’s creating a rift. He says, “Sonam will be always special to me. I can’t tell you the degree of love I have for her. I have shared my initial days of acting with her. We have shared our fears, our sad and happy moments. There will never be any friction between us. There was a time when we were a part of each other’s daily lives. But then you move on, do different films.”

The rising star also spoke about his forthcoming flick, Bachna Ae Haseeno. Going by the promos, he is seen romancing Minissha Lamba, Bipasha Basu and Deepika. However, he insists he isn’t playing a Casanova. Ranbir states, “It is about the different stages in a guy’s life between the ages 17 and 30. I had a blast shooting it.”

Ranbir, who has women swooning over him, also has a lot of male fans. Some give credit to the towel dance sequence in Saawariya. Ranbir smiles, “It is heart-warming to recognize the fact that even men like me.” Let’s see if he manages to take theatres by storm again with Bachna Ae Haseeno.

In the times when girls are shedding their clothes to take the easy route to fame, Sonam Kapoor is content playing the dressed-up roles.

Sonam has set her priorities right at the beginning of her acting career – no exposure and no intimate scenes with co-stars. She was dressed neck to toe in her acting debut Saawariya . And now in her second film Dilli 6 by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra she is donned only in salwar kameez.

The actress says she is not averse to glamorous roles unless they don’t require her to do something she is not comfortable with.

And Sonam stands firm on her principles. Not even a very lucrative offer from a big production house featuring a top filmstar was able to lure Sonam. She turned down the offer because many scenes required nudity and there was also a major lovemaking scene.

“I don’t want to do anything that embarrasses my parents. My dad ( Anil Kapoor ) has a reputation in the industry and I don’t want to spoil it,” Sonam is quoted as saying.

Though she may sound a tad prude, Sonam is far from it. She says she loves being glamourous, and she is really into fashion as well. The only thing is she doesn’t equate glamour with skin-show.

Believe it or not, Sonam has been on the cover of many Indian fashion magazines like L Officiel, Cosmopolitan, Verve, Grazia and now she appears on the cover of the August edition of Elle in which she would don a dress by Rohit Bal .

The Saawariya beauty Sonam Kapoor, who once weighed 90 kilos, has decided to shed some more weight. The lady is being forced by her ultra slim dad, Anil Kapoor. Anil had even gone to the extent of presenting his daughter a sugarless and fat free, birthday cake on her birthday. Sonam was first a little disappointed with the continuous insistence of his dad as she is already thin enough, but eventually, she understood that there still are ladies out in bollywood who are slimmer than her, and her first comparison was none other than Deepika Padukone. Sonam has thus starred running to get as ’slim’ as her boyfriend stealer.
Is it another youngie heading towards size zero??

On her birthday today, Sonam Kapoor clears the air about her relationship with Ranbir Kapoor, working with veterans in her next film and why one can never be too successful or too thin

• What are you doing on your birthday?
Last year, on my birthday I was shooting for Saawariya. And this time I’m shooting for Dilli 6.

• Since you seem to be doing some of the most prestigious projects, do you have any regrets about missing out on Aditya Chopra’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi?
When was it ever mine for me to miss out on it? Adi wanted to meet, so we met. He never mentioned Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. He was very clear that he wanted a new face for it. I’ve already played the simple Indian girl (in Saawariya and Dilli 6) and besides that even my dates for Dilli 6 clashed with Adi’s project. Since I wasn’t denying or accepting that I have been offered that role, everyone jumped to their own conclusions. I even got congratulatory messages when I was holidaying in New York.

• So what kind of roles are you looking for?
I’m being extremely picky because I can afford to be so. I won’t play secondary roles for sure. I would like to take up something that I can relate to. Both my roles in Saawariya and Dilli 6 are different from each another. The only similarity is that both the directors Sanjay Bhansali and Rakeysh Mehra pampered me silly.

• But there’re stories of how Rakeysh bullied you.
What nonsense! Rakeysh is a lamb. He is incapable of screaming at anyone. We get along like house on fire. I instinctively understand how he wants me to do a shot. We don’t even have to say anything to each other. Abhishek, Rakeysh and I had so much fun while shooting for Dilli 6.

• How was your bonding with Abhishek?
He’s tall enough to suit me on screen (laughs). It was different during Saawariya as my relationship with Ranbir was casual as we are childhood friends. However, with Abhishek, I was a thorough professional. He made suggestions gently and if he wanted to make a point, he said it as a joke to avoid any offence. We are on the same wave length and we both love junk food. He would keep digging into my cookies and then blame me for his weight gain.

• You mean he gave you tips on acting?
He has done 35 films, which he keeps reminding me all the time. Besides that, we are from similar backgrounds, both of us have studied abroad and we both have been brought up in Juhu. He also keeps reminding me that he was born in a house opposite mine, which was neither Jalsa nor Prateeksha but an earlier place they lived in. And although he’s ten years older than me, we get along very well.

• You seem really impressed.
Yes. I was bowled over by both Abhishek and Aishwarya. Aishwarya is so beautiful, it’s scary. No one has the right to be so lovely. And the other beauty who leaves me open-mouthed is Waheedaji. I’m so privileged to work with her in Dilli 6. In fact working with the likes of Waheedaji, Om Puriji, Pavan Malhotraji, Rishi Kapoor uncle and Atul Kulkarniji is like going back to acting school all over again.

• What about you and Ranbir?
What about us? Let’s get one thing clear. I was never seeing Ranbir. I’m happy for him. Deepika seems to be a really nice girl.

• Any more films with him?
We’ve got no offers together. But I’m sure we will work together again. We share a great chemistry on screen.

• Ranbir has so many ads on air. Where are yours?
Mine will come by the end of this year. Main lambi race ki ghodi hoon. I’m very quietly ambitious. But I won’t endorse anything I don’t believe in.

• Would you’ve liked to do Om Shanti Om?
I’d have loved to. Who doesn’t want to work with Shah Rukh Khan? Salman and Shah Rukh are my lifelong crush. SRK can make any girl believe he can kill for her. I find that aspect in a man sexy.

• You want a man who loves to kill for you?
I believe in love and passion.

• So which is your next film?
I haven’t signed anything after Dilli 6. Where do I go from here? I hate compromises. I’m getting all sorts of offers from offbeat to hardcore commercial offers. So I’m glad that I am being considered for all kinds of roles. For now, I’m thankful about the fact that I started with a complex role.

• What do you think of your dad Anil Kapoor’s recent films?
I liked him a lot in Welcome and Race. My dad had very different roles in all the films, but the one I am happy about is Black & White. I am proud of the range of roles that he gets to play.

• What about a film with dad?
I would love to work with dad. I get at least two offers in a week to star with him. However, we haven’t got any offer that we would want to take up together.

• Dad’s heroines are your age.
I’ve seen him act with Sri chachi (Sridevi) and now he’s working with Katrina Kaif and Mallika Sherawat. He’s so convincing! If I can see him romancing my chachi, what’s the big deal about these girls? After all, it’s just acting. The youngest heroine he’s acted with is Katrina and she’s only two years older than me.

• Would you like to be a size zero for your birthday?
I lost 35 kgs for my first film. Even if I starve myself I’d never be a size zero. Fortunately, I never put on weight on my face.

• What do you think of Kareena’s weight loss?
She has never looked so good. She has come home for dinner with Saif. She eats really well but has maintained herself. She and Aishwarya are the two most beautiful women in the film industry.

• Karan Johar feels Kareena is too thin.
There’s nothing like being too successful or too thin.

Her beauty has been described by director Sanjay Leela Bhansali as “classic”, and indeed amongst the new breed of actresses in Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor has the perfect Indian look. So, it should not come as a surprise that it’s the Indianness of Rajasthan that bowled this lovely damsel over when she was here shooting for her film Dilli 6 with Abhishek Bachchan. “I love Rajasthan! I have visited the state several times — while my dad was shooting here or during holidays. I am bowled over by its desi touch. I am not only smitten by its palaces and forts but also by the eclectic mix of tradition and westernisation it offers,” she says. And when the traditional touch appeals to her, could she have stayed away from the tasty Rajasthani cuisine?

“Oh! The food is just yum… I can’t forget gatte ki sabzi and thick jawar-bajre ki roti. My diet went out of the window when I was there. Whether it’s a dhaba or a five-star hotel whenever I had time I just went out and ate,” says the actress who is known to have shed her extra kilos for her role in her debut film Sawaariya.

So, are there some funny incidents that she can remember during her shooting stint here? “Well, my sister Sheila Khan had come from New York to spend some time with me and we used to travel to Sambhar daily for the shoot. Both of us are city people and have hardly seen shepherds.

So, on our way to Sambhar one day, we spotted a shepherd at a distance. He was of course in his colourful turban paired with a white outfit and a lovely patch-work shawl. So, my sister got all excited and said, ‘look his sense of style and the colour co-ordination is really cool.’ To this day, I tease her about that man we saw from a distance,” she shares.

That’s about teasing her sister. But is there a cool looking dude in her life? “I want to stay away from guys just now. That’s because most of my friends are guys and I spend a lot of time with them so I know how they think,” she laughs and adds, “Moreover, I haven’t found a guy who is as humble, honest and funny as I want my Mr Right to be.”

Ask her about her dad and she can’t help brimming with pride. “It is very embarrassing when people say that my dad and me can’t play our real life roles in reel life because he looks so young. Actresses like Katrina Kaif are not much older than me and they are sharing the screen space with my dad as his heroines. Well, people still love to see him as a hero and I am proud of that fact.” The proud daughter is in fact all set to follow in daddy’s footsteps. “I want to be like my dad. Like him, I want to do commercial cinema that entertains and also gives some message to the masses. I want to do unconventional roles but not art films because there is no point doing a film that is meant for a niche audience only,” she signs off.

I was never offered Adi’s film: Sonam KapoorSonam Kapoor feels relieved now that Aditya Chopra has finally found a girl for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in Bangalore-based model Anushka Sharma, who will star opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the film. B-Town buzz was that Sonam was to be part of the project.

Signing passers-by
Says the Saawariya actress, “Ever since the project was announced, there was speculation about me being in it. I was never offered the film. I don’t know where the whole thing started. To be honest, I did visit Adi a couple of times like any other actor. But not for any particular role. Maybe people saw me entering Yash Raj. Nowadays, even if an actress passes by Yash Raj, she has signed a film with them.”

What resemblance?
But Anushka does resemble Sonam? “Does she? Hmm… Is that a compliment to me or to her? I never even approached Adi for the role. I had a reason not to. I know it required someone very Punjabi-looking and young.I’ve just played a full-on Punjabi kudi — salwar-kameez sharara-gharara and all, in Rakeysh Mehra’s Dilli 6. Even in Saawariya, I was in Indian clothes. Now I need a change of pace and grace.” She adds, “I’m not signing anything in a hurry. I’ve all the time in the world and the best advisor any actress in Bollywood could have — my dad (Anil Kapoor).”
Apparently, Sonam was also offered the role Barbara Mori is doing in Anurag Basu’s Kites with Hrithik Roshan. Wouldn’t this sizzling heroine’s character change Sonam’s demure image? She is tight-lipped about the Roshan project. “All I’ll say is I’d never compromise on anything. I’d never do anything where I would have to cringe at the premiere.”

Sonam wants SRK, does he?Rumors are abuzz that Sonam Kapoor, the daughter of Anil Kapoor has been signed opposite SRK in Aditya Chopra’s next, ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. When asked Sonam, the actress denies saying, “I’ve met Adi Chopra like any aspiring actress wanting to be in a Yashraj film”. Well, this does not deny that the actress has not bagged a role in Adi’s next, isn’t it? Maybe Sonam has been asked to keep silent until things get more clear.. Or wonder if the King Khan wants to be cast opposite a much younger girl rather than Sonam? Well, you never know!!

Deepika dislikes Ranbir’s closeness to SonamHot and sensational Deepika Padukone is over possessive about her beau Ranbir Kapoor and dislikes his closeness with his first co-star Sonam Kapoor.Ranbir and Sonam stepped into the world of glamour together with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya.
