How to write better text-to-image prompts

Oct 1, 2026

Start with the subject

Name the main subject before adding details. A product, person, room, landscape, or character gives the model a clear anchor. Add the subject's material, color, condition, and important distinguishing features next.

Describe the composition

Explain what the viewer should see and where it should appear: close-up portrait, centered product shot, wide interior, overhead flat lay, or cinematic establishing view. Mention the aspect ratio when the image has a specific publishing destination.

Add lighting and visual direction

Lighting changes the mood and the perceived material of an image. Try soft window light for a calm editorial result, hard side light for a dramatic product scene, or even studio lighting for a clean catalog look. Keep style references specific and avoid stacking unrelated directions.

Iterate one variable at a time

Save a useful result, then change one part of the prompt. If you need to preserve a subject or composition, switch to image-to-image and upload the result as a reference. This makes creative decisions easier to compare and keeps a consistent direction across a series.
